Ann McDermott
A micro-sized email interview conducted by J. Brook last June.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have a fan website for Andy Kaufman and was wondering if I might be able to print your Andy story and photo at the website.
What part of the story do you want? I actually was dating him when he did the Carnegie Hall thing, but that's OK. We'll let Hollywood give his most serious girlfriend credit for that. He was a lot of fun!!!
How did you meet Andy? What were you doing and what was he doing at the time?
Andy and I met in February of 1979 when he was doing SNL, Jacqueline Smith was the hostess. I was working for Warner Cable and was good friends with the Director of Marketing for Nickelodeon who had gone to school with Andy. He was on the phone with him, and I popped my head into his office, and he said do you want to say "hi." He said, "What do you look like?" and I said, " I have brown eyes and brown hair and I'm 6 foot tall." He said, "I'll be right over and we'll have ice cream." He was doing SNL that week, we went over to the studio, and that's where that picture was taken
[see below], by Bill Murray (with his brand new Polaroid one touch camera) on the set of Coneheads Go to the Movies.
He would call me every time he was in NY for about the next 6 months. It was a lot of fun. He and Bob Zmooda would get into arguments in restaurants and then pretend it was all a joke, which it was. He also wanted to make an album entitled "Andy and Grandma" of he and his grandmother going through the family album. An unusual man if ever I met one!
Do you think he's still alive?
When Andy first died I thought he'd come back to life as Tony Clifford but since he's been gone for such a long time now and not returned... I do think his death was for real (unfortunately).
